古い風呂敷がご自宅にある・古いふろしき（風呂敷）を持っているという方からのこんなご質問が時々あります。
それは、写真でもわかるように風呂敷の裏面に縫いつけてある白い三角形の布の名前と、その用途についてです。
受講者からの質問内容
「私の自宅にあった古い風呂敷を見ると、風呂敷には殆ど白い三角形の布が縫い付けてあります。これは何ですか？」
回答
この風呂敷についている白い三角形の布の名前は片布＝ぺんぷ＝Henpuといいます。用途については、自分の名前を書く布です。
理由は、昔風呂敷は日用品として毎日使っていました。同じような文様の風呂敷もたくさんありました。
風呂敷が他人のものか、自分のものかを示すために片布＝へんぷが付いていました。
この片布の話は、もし今生きていたなら100歳を超えている人から教えて貰った話です。
少し前まで風呂敷の裏側に直接ペンで自分の名前を記入する習慣が残っている地方もありました。今はその習慣もなくなりました。
現代では、片布＝へんぷが付いている風呂敷は大変珍しいです。
ご自宅に片布の付いている風呂敷をお持ちの方はどうぞ大切になさってください。

Answer
The name of this white triangular cloth is called"henpu".
Its purpose is to write your name on.
The reason is that furoshiki used to be used as daily necessities. There were many furoshiki with similar patterns.
Henpu" was attached to indicate whether the furoshiki belonged to someone else or to oneself.
I was told this "henpu" story by a person who would be over 100 years old if he were alive today.
Until a short time ago, there were some regions where the custom of writing one's name directly on the back of the furoshiki with a pen was still practiced. I think this was because people still recognized the furoshiki as a tool for daily life in those days.
Nowadays, that custom has disappeared.
Today, it is very rare to find a furoshiki with an "henpu" attached.
